I turned 30! It was far less traumatizing than everyone tells you it’s going to be. In fact, it’s awesome to be 30. I’m really happy and excited to be putting together the penultimate recap post of 2016.
Miles Traveled Map
Only traveled 133 miles this month. We were home all month except for a beautiful Thanksgiving in Cleveland. It feels like we traveled a lot more though because we had eleven guests in our house for six days.
Favorite Destination of the Month
Pittsburgh!! I loved having everyone at my house for my birthday. Friends began arriving the Friday before my birthday and we started right off with a tour of Shadyside’s best late night spots. We hit up karaoke at Cappy’s, had drink on the roof at Mario’s, and finished it off with late night eats at Ritter’s Diner. In the morning, my brother and sister-in-law joined our ranks and we had breakfast at Pamela’s. That’s just a fraction of our tour of Pittsburgh highlights throughout the week.
Best Travel Moments
Creating a Harry Potter wonderland and having my birthday party in it.
Everyone went all out creating their costumes for this party. It was amazing. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. Thanks to everyone who came to the party, helped setup for the party, and helped clean up the gigantic fun mess we made!
Saying good-bye to 29 and hello to 30 with three of my favorite people.
We went to the Sphinx Cafe hookah bar to smoke and enjoy some sparkling wine, then over the Mad Mex across the street for tequila and burritos. It was absolutely perfect. Photos are just for us. Thank you Ry, Beth, and Kevin!!
My family visiting for my birthday.
My parents arrived the day before my birthday to help celebrate, too! It was great to have my parents and my brother in town. My parents made a lot of my favorite foods like Caesar salad, roast, and vichyssoise. Mom made her amazing cheesecake for dessert.
Making Thanksgiving dinner in Ohio.
I still can’t believe we pulled it off, but Beth and I made an amazing Thanksgiving dinner complete with a bacon-covered turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and green bean casserole in a kitchen that was totally new to us while watching the most adorable pair of Basset hounds.
Spending a day in Stars Hollow, CT.
On Black Friday we stayed home and cooked nothing more complex than mac and cheese from a box and watched all four of the new Gilmore Girls episodes. Luckily, we didn’t finish all the junk food we prepared for the party.
Worst Travel Moments
An unfortunate delivery pizza order from a formerly favorite restaurant.
We ordered pizza from my parents favorite place in Pittsburgh on the first night of their visit. My brother found a worm crawling on his pizza. The owner was a total jerk about it. We all left reviews of the incident on Yelp.
Favorite Travel Tool
It’s a boring one this month folks: paper towels. With all the parties, we went through a great many paper towels and they cleaned up a great many sticky messes. But the best use we found for them was getting filtering cork pieces out of wine because we accidentally broke a cork and dropped it into the wine. Just place a paper towel over a wine glass and pour slowly. You’ll have wine in your glass and cork pieces in the paper towel only.
Favorite New Food
This new category in my monthly roundups will be all about new foods that I try on my travels. So, none of the wonderful things my parents cooked for me count because I’ve eaten them countless times. But what does count is the bacon-covered turkey from Thanksgiving. By covering the turkey in slices of bacon and then putting the whole thing in an oven bag we made a crazy moist turkey with no basting. We got to lay on the couch and watch the Macy’s Parade and the Dog Show. The bacon burnt a bit but the turkey underneath got a crazy amount of compliments.
None. Just none. It was a totally lazy month. Worked out a few times, did a lot of walking, but no accomplishments to speak of. December will be very different.
